  • The SEND Advisor also has excellent instincts, picking up on signs that would otherwise go unnoticed in order to ensure provision as early as possible to those pupils requiring it. She evidently cares a great deal about the pupils, but she should also ensure that, where possible, she is able to share her workload with colleagues both inside and outside the department so as to avoid having to work late and to avoid any possible misunderstandings or miscommunications. It is clear that she is committed to supporting SEND pupils and developments in the School’s SEND provision are evident.

  • Departmental Leadership The SEND Advisor is a dedicated and incredibly hard-working member of staff who is both supportive of and encouraging towards her assistant and those pupils in her care. She possesses a veritable wealth of knowledge and is always happy to disseminate this in order to develop the understanding and skills of her assistant and the wider teaching staff. A caring line manager, she works closely with her assistant, checking that she is not overloaded with work and always making time to answer any questions, even when she is incredibly busy herself. It is fair to say that her work at NLCS has been transformative.

  • It is certainly the case that NLCS has a strong and well-supported community of neurodivergent students. Only four years ago, there was a tangible sense of isolation experienced by such pupils, many of whom experienced feelings of difference to their peers. At that time, it was not unusual for students to make statements when meeting with the Head of SEND such as “I think I’m weird.” “Nobody likes me” and “I’m different.”. Now, with the plethora support measures as well as new locations, there is a sense of affinity, self-awareness and self-acceptance, moving students beyond feeling ‘different’ towards a place where they feel understood, valued and accepted, with the confidence to express their needs. The SEND Department has reported that this has ensured that they can accommodate needs that may well have gone under the radar as well as having a noticeably positive effect on neurodivergent students’ self-esteem and self-acceptance, thereby positively impacting their mental health.
